Frequently Asked Questions

Can I actually use this on regular tap water, or is it just for emergencies out in the wild?

Both, and that's kind of the point. Most people think of a filter straw as something for camping trips, not something for their own kitchen tap.

But your tap depends on the power grid too. When the power goes out, water treatment plants can't run, pressure drops, and what comes out of your faucet can turn unsafe fast, sometimes with zero warning.

This doesn't need power at all. It works the same whether it's your kitchen tap, a pond, or a creek, so the moment your regular water stops being trustworthy, you're already covered.

Is it really safe to drink out of a pond or creek with this thing?

Yes, that's exactly what it's built for. The membrane inside has openings just 0.1 microns wide.

Bacteria start around 0.2 microns, and parasites are bigger still, so they physically can't fit through, like trying to force a basketball through a chain-link fence.

That gets you 99.9999% of bacteria and parasites removed, the pathogens actually responsible for most serious illness from untreated water.

We test it against retention ponds, creeks, rivers, and standing water, the same kinds of sources sitting near most neighborhoods, whether people think of them as "water sources" or not.

Why not just rely on stored bottled water?

Storing water is a reasonable start, but it's not the full plan people think it is. A family of four needs close to 100 gallons to make it two weeks without running water.

Almost nobody has that much stored. And once it runs out, you're back to nothing, except now several days have already passed.

The real problem isn't how much you can stockpile ahead of time, it's what happens once that runs out. Most neighborhoods have a pond, canal, or creek within reach, water that's already there.

You just need a way to actually use it, the part bottled water can't help with once the cases are gone.

Why not just run a generator instead?

A generator helps with plenty of things, but it competes with your water problem for the same limited fuel instead of solving it.

Most people running a generator during an outage are using that fuel for the fridge, lights, or medical equipment, not dedicating it to boiling water around the clock for days.

And fuel runs out fast. Gas stations are often dry within days after a major outage, with long lines for whatever's left.

This filters water directly, no fuel, no generator, nothing to compete for with everyone else trying to solve the exact same problem.

Why not just boil the water?

Boiling kills bacteria, but it has real gaps in an actual emergency. It requires fuel or electricity, which are usually the first things to go during an outage.

A couple of camp stove canisters won't stretch far for a family over several days. Boiling also does nothing for sediment, microplastics, or other debris, so your water can be sterile and still full of things you don't want to drink.

In several states, natural water sources also carry algal toxins that boiling doesn't neutralize at all, state health departments are explicit about this.

This filters the contaminants out physically instead, no electricity, no fuel, no waiting around for water to cool.

Will it handle chemicals or fertilizer runoff, that kind of thing?

The activated carbon layer handles organic chemicals, chlorine, and bad taste or smell, so it makes a real difference in water that's off in those ways.

For the biological threats, bacteria, parasites, protozoa, the membrane blocks all of it by size. Those are the contaminants most likely to make you seriously sick within hours.

No filter on the market removes every chemical that exists, and we won't pretend otherwise. But for what you're actually likely to encounter near your home, this uses the same filtration tech military field units carry.

What actually makes this better than a cheap camping filter or a pitcher filter?

A few concrete differences, not just marketing language. Capacity: rated for 400 gallons, well beyond most basic camping filters. Pitcher filters like Brita aren't built for this kind of use at all.

What's in the box: the straw, a 1.5L collapsible reservoir, an extension tube so you're not leaning directly over the water source, a backflush syringe, and a carabiner clip. Most cheap filters give you the straw and nothing else.

Filtration: a 0.1-micron membrane paired with activated carbon, the same category of tech used in military and first-responder gear. Pitcher filters only address taste and chlorine, not bacteria or parasites.

It also carries a lifetime warranty, because of what people are actually trusting it with.

How long does one straw actually last?

Each straw is rated for 400 gallons. For one person drinking a gallon a day, that's over a year of clean water.

For a family of four, one straw covers roughly three months, so a 5-pack gets your whole family through a year or more.

It also never expires, stored clean and dry, it performs the same whether you use it next week or five years from now. Keep one in the garage, one in the car, one by the door, and forget about it until the day you need it.

What happens if it doesn't work for me? What's the guarantee?

You're covered by a 60-day risk-free guarantee, not satisfied for any reason, send it back for a full refund, no conditions attached.

On top of that, every LifeLine carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. These are built for people trusting them with their family's safety, and we don't take that lightly.
